Five Galesburg High School students recently attended the largest gathering of America's future skilled workforce in Atlanta, Georgia at the Skills USA National Competition. Alice Green, Kymorrah Jackson, Nayelie Perez, Axel Holt, and William Edwards along with Skills USA Program Coordinator, Corbyn Wascher all traveled to Atlanta to gain valuable industry experience, learn about new technologies and advancements in the field, and develop their leadership abilities.
The students competed in three competitions including, Audio Radio production, Photography, and Additive Manufacturing. The competition lasted for close to 25 hours, and even with the long hours, the students had a great time and learned more about the industries they competed in.
One of the highlights of the trip was the interaction with other students from across the entire country. Students participated in "pin trading" throughout their time in Atlanta. Each state had a unique pin design, the goal was to collect a pin from each of the 50 states. The Galesburg High School students completed this goal, and the pins will be on display in Corbyn Wascher's room as a memory of their achievements.
The competition was a success and a GHS student placed in the top 10 of the Audio Radio Production competition. According to Wascher, "Overall, it was a successful and fun experience for the students at Skills USA Nationals."
