Class of 2020 Graduation Information
To the proud Silver Streaks of the Class of 2020:
In a couple of weeks, we will celebrate one of our favorite events at Galesburg High School – Commencement Weekend. We wish we could celebrate Commencement and Prom 2020 with you in a traditional setting. We would like to thank all the parents, staff, students and community members who have reached out to share ideas. Unfortunately due to COVID 19, the CDC guidelines, and our insurance restrictions, we are not going to be able to physically celebrate together as we would have in the past to mark this monumental occasion.
Here are a few important pieces of information regarding the class of 2020’s Commencement:
- Rather than a traditional graduation ceremony, GHS Commencement for the class of 2020 will be celebrated via a virtual ceremony. The virtual Commencement ceremony – including the reading of each graduate’s name by Mrs. Ritchie along with the traditional speeches –will be posted through different mediums at noon on June 1st, 2020.
- To commemorate this important event we will offer the opportunity for students to be professionally photographed and videotaped on May 23 or May 24. On this day students will be videotaped as they walk across a stage and then be photographed. Proper social distancing must be maintained during this event. Families signing up for a slot will receive an email with detailed information about the procedures and instructions.

Congratulations once again on a remarkable accomplishment. Congratulations are also extended to the parents, siblings, extended family members, friends, faculty and staff members, and others who have aided you on this journey. Through your hard work, perseverance and dedication you are about to join an exclusive group of Silver Streak alums who will go on to do great things!
With all of the best wishes,
GHS Class of 2020 Graduation
Thank you for signing up for a time to come and receive your Diploma at the GHS Fieldhouse. Our goal is to create a memorable experience for your student to receive their diploma and be recognized in a graduation ceremony. Galesburg High School has over 260 graduates and thus it will take time to honor every student. Due to this it is very important that you arrive on time and prepared for your assigned slot. We look forward to celebrating this momentous occasion with you all!
Step 1: Arriving at the GHS Campus
Please arrive at your designated time, and no more than 10 minutes before. There will be a brief wait while we serve all graduates in each time slot. Dayton Drive will be closed to traffic. Please enter through the main parking lot off of Fremont and proceed down Stadium Drive (behind the Football Field). When you arrive at the first checkpoint, please be prepared to give the name of your student. You will then proceed to a designated parking spot and remain in your car until you are directed to come into the Fieldhouseby a parking lot attendant.
Step 2: Entering the Fieldhouse
When you are directed, the student and three guests (4 total people) will proceed into the Fieldhouse doors. Once inside the vestibule you will check in and give your name. In order to adhere to the CDC guidelines we ask that you wait until you are directed to enter the Fieldhouse for your student to receive their diploma and have your pictures taken. The student and guests will proceed into the Fieldhouse when directed to do so.
To the Graduate, some things to remember: This is it, the time you have worked so hard for over the past years. We know you did not want this to be this way, but this is your time to be honored. You will make your way to the stage where you will proceed across as your name is read by Mrs. Ritchie, just as you would have in the traditional ceremony. Once you receive your diploma cover, proceed and SMILE for your professional picture. Keep that smile on because you will join your three guests and have another professional picture taken.
Parents/Special Guests, once inside the Fieldhouse, you will proceed to your left and you will watch your graduate walk across the stage. We invite you to take your own photos/videos of your graduate at this moment and cheer on their accomplishment. You will continue to proceed to meet with the graduateafter exiting the stage for a professional photo.
Step 3: Exiting the Fieldhouse
Once you have had your picture taken you will proceed to the East doors to exit the fieldhouse and return to your vehicle and depart from the GHS campus.
Do I wear my cap and gown?
Yes, please! We will be recording your walk across the stage and all the video taken will be compiled for the virtual ceremony released June 1st.
Will my diploma be inside the cover? Potentially yes, depending on fee payment. Not all fees have been added on Skyward as school is still in session. If your student is no longer using school property (e.g. Chromebook, textbooks, etc..), please contact GHS to drop these items off with no contact. Although most fees are added already, on Tuesday, May 19th you should again check to see that all fees have been taken care of. Please login to Skyward Family Access and select “Fee Management” For more detailed instructions please click here. While we recognize that this potentially creates a quick turnaround for fee payment, it is imperative that fees are paid before we can release the actual diploma. If fees are unpaid, we can mail the diploma once fees are paid. Students can participate in the walk across the stage regardless of fee payment.
Do I have to wear a face mask or covering?
Yes. Face masks or acceptable face covering must be worn by all individuals entering the Fieldhouse. The Graduate may take off their mask when they walk up on the stage and for the professional diploma cover picture. The guests of the graduate may remove their mask for the professional family picture. No one will be admitted to enter the Fieldhouse without a mask or acceptable face covering. For more information on face coverings please visit the Illinois Department of Public Health by clicking here.
Can I meet my friends outside for a picture? No. Congregating in groups of people outside of the Fieldhouse on the GHS campus is prohibited. We understand how difficult it will be not to rush up to your classmate for a picture, however due to the COVID 19 Social Distancing guidelines, we cannot permit this on the campus.
What will the video released June 1 include?
Our intent was twofold, the priority being for you to have the opportunity to celebrate your student’s walk across the stage and into the next phase of their life. The second goal was for you to have a memory to cherish that included as many aspects of a traditional ceremony as possible. The video will be released June 1st at noon through various mediums. It can be viewed as often as you would like, and downloaded for you to keep. This virtual graduation video will include your student’s walk across the stage from May 23 or 24, pre-recorded student and faculty speeches, and Dr. Asplund’s formal acceptance of the class of 2020.
