Halocline Lab
Mrs. Buebe’s students in Earth Systems are investigating the effect of salinity on the density of water. They then infer how density differences create global ocean currents.

The GIF video clip shows a demonstration using blue colored fresh water and yellow colored salt water. You can watch as the yellow salt water layer moves under the blue fresh water, creating interesting wave-like shapes along the boundary. The boundary between the fresh and salt layers is called a halocline. This part of the lab has one halocline. This green halocline layer is where mixing occurred. The water here is brackish.

Mrs. Buebe’s Earth Systems students are using these models to help learn about ecosystems involving estuaries. An estuary is a place where a river carrying fresh water empties into an ocean containing salt water. Estuaries are usually highly stratified based on salinity. This means that fresh water, brackish water, and salt water tend to form layers under the surface of the water.  
 


M&M Predation Lab

Okay, I admit it. I am a bit of a predator when it comes to the candy my own children gather around Halloween, Christmas, and Easter. And some types of candy get eaten sooner than others. Chomp, chomp, chomp! But aren’t we all a little like that?

Mrs. Buebe’s Biology classes are using M&Ms in a different way, showing how predation can affect evolutionary processes. Different colors and sizes of M&Ms are placed on colored backgrounds. The pieces of candy with the best chances of survival are those that blend in best.

Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream
Mr. Baxter runs some pretty “cool” activites in his classes. Liquid nitrogen ice cream is on the menu. Yum!
